HELIOS Benchmark Calculation: Radiation-Driven Capsule Implosion in Z-Pinch Dynamic Hohlraum

ثبت نشده
چکیده

In this HELIOS benchmark simulation, a spherical capsule embedded in a low-density CH2 foam is imploded by an external radiation field. The parameters utilized in this benchmark simulation are taken from z-pinch-driven dynamic hohlraum experiments performed at the Z facility at Sandia National Laboratories [1]. The time-dependent hohlraum radiation field is constrained by on-axis XRD and bolometer measurements. The trajectory of the capsule implosion is obtained from x-ray framing camera measurements. We compare the simulated capsule implosion trajectory with experimental data.

Target design for high fusion yield with the double Z-pinch-driven hohlrauma..

A key demonstration on the path to inertial fusion energy is the achievement of high fusion yield !hundreds of MJ" and high target gain. Toward this goal, an indirect-drive high-yield inertial confinement fusion !ICF" target involving two Z-pinch x-ray sources heating a central secondary hohlraum is described by Hammer et al. #Phys. Plasmas 6, 2129 !1999"$. In subsequent research at Sandia Nati...

Time- and space-resolved spectroscopy of dynamic hohlraum interiors

A dynamic hohlraum is created when an annular z-pinch plasma implodes onto a cylindrical 0.014 g/cc 6-mm-diameter CH2 foam. The impact launches a radiating shock that propagates toward the axis at w350 mm/ns. The radiation trapped by the tungsten z-pinch plasma forms a w200 eV hohlraum that provides X-rays for indirect drive inertial confinement fusion capsule implosion experiments. We are deve...

Hohlraum-driven high-convergence implosion experiments with multiple beam cones on the omega laser facility.

High-convergence implosion experiments have been performed on the Omega laser facility [T.R. Boehly, Opt. Development of Improved Radiation Drive Environment for High Foot Implosions at the National Ignition Facility.

Analyses of high foot implosions show that performance is limited by the radiation drive environment, i.e., the hohlraum. Reported here are significant improvements in the radiation environment, which result in an enhancement in implosion performance. Using a longer, larger case-to-capsule ratio hohlraum at lower gas fill density improves the symmetry control of a high foot implosion. Moreover,...
